Drupal's Biggest Challenge

Mark Boulton just discovered first hand the single biggest challenge facing the Drupal community today: Fear of change.

Mark: "Hey community, we're going to change everything... starting with this! What do you think?"
Community: "AAAAAH!! NO! You can't do that!"

When a large group of people are given a platform to express their feelings on whether "highly visible feature XYZ" should be changed, you will always find more than enough highly vocal individuals willing to say "no", and give you a litany of different reasons why what you're doing is absolutely wrong, a bad move, dangerous, or worse.

The Top 250 Drupal Search Terms

I've been doing some analysis of the search data from DrupalModules.com.

Top 250 Drupal Search Terms

These are the top 250 Drupal search terms, based on 29,754 user-unique searches performed in the last 4 weeks via the Drupal Modules search box. Font size is proportional to the number of searches made.

These results do not include searches made using Module Finder. Due to Module Finder's interactive nature, it does not generate the kind of statistics you get from a normal search box.

A3 Atlantis Theme Released For Drupal 6

Due to popular demand, A3 Atlantis is now available for Drupal 6!

Drupal 6 Theme A3 Atlantis

A3 Atlantis features a standards-compliant layout, designed with speed, elegance, and search engine friendliness in mind. The XHTML/CSS codebase provides stunning looks and beautiful typography in every browser.

The new Drupal 6 release comes with some minor improvements, including smaller file sizes, more efficient code, and extra theme support for the Views 2 and Coder modules.

From the user's perspective, it should look identical to the Drupal 5 release, which you can see in action here.

Yesterday, my Orphaned Works article hit the front page of Reddit, a popular social news site. Traffic instantly increased by a factor of more than 20. At peak, the site was serving over 30 requests a second, enough to take down most poorly configured Drupal sites. In this article, I'll show you how I survived, and what steps you can take to make sure your site is ready for the Reddit Effect.

Traffic graph

These first 2 tips will give you the quickest bang-for-your-buck, and based on my research, more than half of new Drupal sites fail to take advantage of them!
